Introduction
Enhancing Tactical Urbanism for Sustainable Community Impact
Across cities worldwide, communities engage in tactical urbanism—creative, small-scale interventions aimed at improving urban spaces. However, many of these passionate, community-led projects struggle to sustain their efforts due to a lack of the right tools.
I collaborated with 3 UX/ UI designer, in a 3-week remote sprint, to design tactical urbanism tool prioritising user needs.

Research
Understanding the Users
Through primary research including surveys (5+ responses) and user interviews (5 participants), we identified a critical pain point:
Community members struggle to sustain tactical urbanism projects due to inadequate reporting, tracking, and collaboration tools.
We synthesized 20+ insights through affinity mapping, uncovering key user needs:
Integrated reporting tools – To effectively document progress and challenges, offering better data visualization and information architecture.
Collaborative platform – To enable seamless community engagement, allowing users to share experiences, feedback, and insights.
Simplified project tracking – To streamline efforts with a more intuitive and user-friendly way of managing tasks, ensuring efficiency and usability
I prioritize clear and effective communication.

I want an easy-to-use system for reporting issues, ensuring that I can quickly and clearly describe problems
I find project delays frustrating due to a lack of clarity and the dependency on collaborators.
I value community, but limited time makes it hard to contribute fully.
A Click That Sparked Inspiration
Our research into street plans helped us understand how information architecture and user flows drive successful initiatives. Then, a social media post showcasing a tactical urbanism project inspired us. The video’s progression and the buzz in the comments—full of user feedback and excitement—motivated our team to design solutions that prioritize community-driven experiences and real-world impact. From the comments, we identified key needs and conducted interviews to further refine our approach.

Understanding the market space
We analyzed major tactical urbanism initiatives to understand the existing landscape.
This involved:
-Identifying what current tools offer
-Recognizing gaps in project sustainability and reporting
-Extracting best practices from established solutions
We Found a Major Market Gap:Community projects lack seamless reporting and tracking features.

Revolutionizing Community Projects
Given the complexity of the problem, we strategically prioritized features to ensure an impactful, low-risk launch.
Key Features Prioritized:
Report & Success Stories – Enable users to share project updates easily
Buy-in & Collaboration – Facilitate partnerships and funding opportunities
Project Tracking – Provide transparency and accountability for project progress
These features were largely absent in existing solutions, presenting an opportunity for innovation.

Usability Testing
Faced with a split decision on whether reporting or initiative discovery should lead the user flow, I proposed A/B testing wireframes, which the team approved, yielding key insights that informed our final choice from 6 usability tests .

What Users Really Thought
A/B Testing Results : Reporting Vs Discoverability
We conducted A/B testing on wireframes to test whether reporting or discovering initiatives should come first. The results showed that prioritizing discovering initiatives first allowed users to complete the task more effectively. Based on this, we refined the task flow in our mid-fidelity prototypes, placing discovery at the forefront for a more intuitive experience.
Also, 80% of participants indicated they would use the tool, citing the reporting and discovery features as particularly impactful.
Key Insights from User Feedback
"Reporting feels intuitive, like the Citizen app for crime reporting."
"The map’s location-lock feature is helpful for real-time updates."
"I love the report feature—it’s exactly what my neighborhood needs."
Findings
1.Confusion around report submission steps – Users struggled with clarity on how to submit reports.
2.Navigation issues – The message board was hard to find.
3. Unclear categorization – Users found it difficult to classify reports accurately.
